Redact PDFs Directly in Your Browser

Mark sensitive content for redaction by dragging a box over text, numbers, or images, or use Sensitive Info to scan the document for common patterns like email addresses, phone numbers, and credit card numbers. Review the matches, select the ones to remove, and add them to your redaction areas alongside anything marked manually. Choose a redaction style — Solid Blackout, Custom Label, or Whiteout Mask — then Sanitize & Export. The underlying text bytes are stripped from the PDF, and the whole process runs locally in your browser.

How Redaction Works

  1. 1

    Select Your PDF

Choose or drag your PDF into the editor. FormatGrid loads the document directly in your browser's local RAM — no server uploads involved.

  2. 2

    Mark Sensitive Content

Click and drag across sensitive text, numbers, signatures, or figures to draw a redaction mask, or use Sensitive Info to automatically find matches like emails, phone numbers, and credit card numbers, then select the ones to redact.

  3. 3

    Sanitize & Export

Click Sanitize & Export. The client-side engine strips matching text bytes from the PDF content stream and burns the masks into flat pixels, outputting a secure file ready to download.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Text inside redaction zones is stripped directly from the underlying PDF content streams before output. The redacted characters no longer exist in the document bytes, making recovery impossible even with OCR or AI extraction.

Yes. Sensitive Info scans the document for common patterns — email addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, and similar identifiers — and lists each match so you can review and select the ones to redact before adding them to your redaction areas.

Yes. Our engine extracts non-redacted text coordinates and reconstructs an invisible, clean OCR text layer over the final document. Everything outside your blackout zones remains 100% searchable and copyable.

Never. All text stream parsing, image rendering, and byte stripping occur locally in your browser's sandbox. No file data ever leaves your device or touches an external server.

Three: Solid Blackout for a plain black box, Custom Labels to show text like "REDACTED" in place of the hidden content, or Whiteout Masks to blend the covered area into a light background.
